Resolution No. 2008-09 - Passed by Consensus Re-energizing the Gwitchin Communities Whereas; It's been 20 years since the 1988 mandate to protect the porcupine caribou herd calving grounds within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on the costal plain in Alaska; Whereas; The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation has taken the lead over the last several years in achieving the 1988 mandate; Whereas; The threats to the calving grounds in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge have increased and the pressure to develop the costal plains is immense; Whereas; The Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation sees the need to re-energize, re-organize and re-strategize as a nation. Therefore Be It Resolved; The Vuntut Gwitchin Government caribou coordination branch seek financial assistance to put together a Gwitchin community tour about the mandate and history of the 1988 gathering in Arctic Village, Alaska beginning in early 2009.
