Resolution No. 2019-01 - Passed by Consensus

Traditional Adoption

Whereas;  Traditional adoption has existed in our community for time immemorial;

Whereas;  Children who were traditionally adopted within families are cared for and raised within their 
		Gwich'in culture;
          
Whereas;  Yukon Government Social Services does not recognize traditional adoption or the role of 
		Elders in guiding traditional adoption


Therefore Be It Resolved;	

The VGG Health and Social Department, with direction and feedback from Elders, will negotiate 
jurisdiction to formalize traditional/custom adoption that confirms a child has been taken into guardianship
within their family according to our traditional laws and historical practices;

That this formal process will be enacted and then communicated to Yukon Government so they are aware 
of our process of traditional/custom adoption.
